Explore Graphic Arts As A Career

Sabtu, 26 Juli 2014

By Maryl Joop

A career in graphic arts can be both rewarding and fulfilling for those individuals who wish to face a new challenge at work every day and who want to have the freedom of using their artistic creativity with in their profession. Graphic art professionals typically are responsible for creating visual impressions, either by hand or by using a computer generation program, that are commissioned for a number of reasons.

Paying someone else to do it can be expensive, especially if all you want is one or two copies for friends. They would have to scan in the painting to the computer or repaint it themselves. The price of using their services is only worth it if youre producing your painting at a wide scale. Again, that isnt very cost effective if you are hoping to only need 1 digital or a few printed copies of it. Luckily, these arent a painters only resources when it comes to reprinting. She also has the option of taking a picture of it herself, and then doing as she pleases with it.

Cameras have escalated to a high enough quality that taking a picture with the right camera will beautifully capture a realistic version of the painting itself. What constitutes the right camera you ask? Maybe when you think of taking a picture of it, you turn to your smart phone, or your sleek, pocket-sized camera that you take with you everywhere.

If you want to keep your Salt Lake City printing job, then dont create something on your computer in RGB. Keep it in CMYK-Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black). These rules are both correct and should be followed strictly. Although it may seem illogical, there are perfectly good reasons to choose the right color scheme to your printing mediums in Salt Lake City.

They outstrip both the smart phone and the pocket-sized cameras (typically called point and shoots) in a few very important ways. A smart phone may have a ton of megapixels, but in the world of cameras, megapixels arent all that matters. You have to have a big enough sensor to capture light for those megapixels to do much. The sensor is located at the back of the camera. It is the part that is exposed to the light presented before it. It captures light and saves it.

These businesses are looking for web design in Salt Lake City to promote and advance their business ventures. Therefore a person with skills and education in web design in Salt Lake City should be able to find employment with a company to create, develop and maintain that companys website.

All of these positions require certification through a bachelors degree and education within graphic arts programs that can be offered at collegiate level educational institutions around the nation and online. These schools can be tailor fit for those persons who are already in an established position but who wish to receive more education in their spare time or who wish to change career paths.

They also differ in an important way in regards to their sights. The view window you look through looks about 2 or 3 inches higher than the picture youre taking. In other words, your view window looks at something different than your lens does. Its your sensors view that matters.

This difference makes it hard to capture what you want to capture. An SLR uses a system of mirrors to see out of your lens. This makes a difference in the quality of the pictures you take of your paintings. To recap, an SLR takes better quality pictures of your art with a larger sensor, combined with a high number of megapixels and takes a picture of the things youre looking at.

Thats not always what youre looking for though. Without proper black tones, your shapes and pictures will lack a sharp element. For example, pictures of butterflies look dull and blurry without adding black into the picture. Next time you need to do printing in Salt Lake City, be sure to consider carefully what medium your design will be displayed on, and adjust accordingly.

Finding A Specialist In Iphone Repair

Sabtu, 14 Juni 2014

By Serena Price

Nowadays, communication through mobile phones has become an essential part of human life that is unimaginable to live without the devices. An iphone is one of the phones that has greatly improved people lives. Its importance goes beyond communication. It has some applications that are useful in doing others things such as determining direction. However, just like other electronic devices, it is also prone to damages. When your iphone gets spoilt, it does not imply that it is the end of it. Instead, it means that you have to look for a specialist in iphone repair.

Finding a reliable repairer is not an easy job but there are some few methods you can try and find effective. The easiest way out when you are in these kind of problems is seeking assistance from friends. You would even get more help from friends who have the same type of device as yours. Ask them if they have had a similar problem before and if so, how they handled it. You better be careful though when asking for help from your friends.

When it comes to business, friends favor each other a lot. In this scenario, you may be directed to a certain repairer not because he is good at what he does but because he is a friend to your friends. So when these kinds of jobs come up, they feel like they owe him a favor of getting customers to him. As a safe rule, do not allow your buddies to hire the technician for you. Their only purpose is to direct you to him and after that you are the only one who can give him the job based on your assessment.

Another way of finding a repairer is by using the internet. You may come across online directories, personal websites and review websites. If you will see any review site, make sure to check it first because they are more helpful than the other sources. They list technicians according to their performances and greatly rely on people who have taken their iphones to these technicians for repairs to do so. They carry out online surveys on these clients and use their responses to do the ranking.

The websites also have platforms that allow people to chat and share a thing or two. You should be prepared to take note of such chats. The conversations may help you know the different personalities of the different repairers and determine the one that suits you most.

Online directories contain address and contact information. Some sites though provide an option of searching for experts using area codes. If you know your code, the only work you will be required to do is to type it in the search box of the site. Note though that some sites may require you to sign up in order to view the information.

Personal websites may also assist you in locating the right technician. They have details concerned with addresses, charges and contacts. Not all technicians have personal websites so you should not assume that all the websites you will see represent all the repairers in your residence.

Another option you can find useful in locating a specialist in iphone repair is the yellow pages. They contain same details as online directories. In case you find many contacts, you do not need to note all of them down. Select a few at random since they are not listed according to the performances of the repairers.

Picking A Great Place To Get Color Copies

Kamis, 22 Mei 2014

By Serena Price

Choosing a great place to do your color copies helps you in several ways. When you need the sort of service that these establishments provide, you can trust a reputable team to come through for you. However, in order to find a business that you can depend on, you must consider several factors. By evaluating each using these guidelines, you will have comfort and peace of mind in the future.

First of all, potential customers should evaluate the number and type of payment options that are available. Many people nowadays like using credit cards to make their payments and when they end up in a store that does not accept it, that can make it harder for them to conduct business. Always call ahead of time or check the website of any company you plan to do a transaction with in order to ensure that they accept whatever form of payment you plan to use.

Consider their location and also ask about delivery options. Some retailers make it hard to reach them because they are positioned in areas that are always busy with traffic. This means you have to burn gas and prepare to be stuck behind irritated road users for a while before you can get to them. Sometimes no parking space is provided for the people who come by the store. However others go the extra mile by delivering your order to your door.

Certain advantages are made possible when businesses set up mechanisms which make things easier for their customers. For example, they may arrange to have clients upload files and then use these to create prints for them which are sent by courier. In other situations, clients can simply email documents to them. This saves time and money.

In Washington, DC, quite a few people need passport photos. However, all of the establishments in this area are not equally suited to people who must get visas done for foreign countries. While photographers are generally aware of all the requirements for American documents, they sometimes do not know about the style required for other nations. If you travel a lot this is another factor to consider.

Great prices are a solid reason to choose one provider of color copies over another. Just a few cents more per copy can make a big difference when you are requesting thousands of them. Some organizations ensure that their customers always get reasonable prices while those appear to practice price gouging. Those organizations do not encourage clients to spend money with them.

Good customer service really does make all the difference for lots of customers. If you are sure that your company has whatever it needs, you can do even better when you receive support form a caring customer service team. Qualified representatives will make suggestions for ways in which you can cut costs or get documents that are even more attractive. They always treat you fairly whether you interact with them online or offline.

There are good shops that offer clear color copies at an affordable price. If you partner with a place that has customer care personnel who are polite and responsive, you can always relax while doing business with them. Places with great opening hours make it easier to get work printed anytime you need it and this is convenient when you have important meetings.

I cant belive I found this in a CAD file!

Rabu, 26 Maret 2014

While working on a file today I came across a bit of text that must have been pasted into the file by accident:

It seems that somebody was watching HULU at work one day, found the link to an episode of "Greys Anatomy" and pasted it into this DWG file instead of their browser!  OOPS!!!  I guess they just got busted for goofing off at work!

What is a Class

Selasa, 18 Maret 2014

Welcome back to Java Code Online. Class is the most commonly thing in Java. Having a good understanding of class is essential for getting a firm grip on the Principle of OOPS and Java itself. A class is called the blueprint of an Object. Everything that is done in Java, has to be enclosed within a class.

As I said before that the class is a blueprint of an Object, it is used for making Objects. I Java we know that everything is an Object, and if we dont know then we must know this. Java is built on the Principle of OOPS and is totally Object Oriented. So Java see everything as an Object.

I will take you through a through understanding of this concept. A class is used to define a new data type, and normally a separate class is used to make Objects of this new data type. Think of a class as something which defines what an Object knows and what an Object does. Therefore a class is also called a template for an Object and an Object is called an instance of the class. Thus a class contains the instance variables (things which an Object knows) and methods (things which an Object does).

A class is just like a blueprint and it covers every intricate detail about the Object that will be made from it. The normal structure of class is that it defines everything about an Object, so suppose that your application consists of some Objects, and so you make classes for each. Now you define a main class which will initiate all the calling procedure.

The main class always contain the method "main". This method tell the JVM that this is the main class and it need to start execution from here. Once in the main class, you can define Objects of other classes that you have made. I will take a simple example to clarify my point.

// This program declares two Car objects.
class Square {
int width;
int height;
}

class SquareDemo2 {
public static void main(String args[]) {
Square mySquare1 = new Square();
Square mySquare2 = new Square();
int area;
// assign values to mySquare1s instance variables
mySquare1.width = 10;
mySquare1.height = 20;
/* assign different values to mySquare2s instance variables */
mySquare2.width = 15;
mySquare2.height = 15;
// compute area of first Square
area = mySquare1.width * mySquare1.height;
System.out.println("Area is " + area);
// compute area of second box
area = mySquare2.width * mySquare2.height;
System.out.println("Area is " + area);
}
}

The first System.out.println results in:- 200
The second System.out.println results in:- 225

Now you must be wondering about so many new things, I have shown above. I will cover each of them.

Here we have defined two classes Square and SquareDemo2. The first class is used for making an Object of type Car. The second Class uses this new data type for making new Objects. Now as told before, the execution begins from the class containing the "main" method.

Now as you can see that there are two different outputs for the two Objects, this shows that both the Objects are unique and are independent of each other. Here System.out.println is used for displaying the results at the console or output screen.

The lines starting with // are skipped by the Java compiler. Infact the // is the syntax for Comment in Java. These are very helpful in explaining the functioning of the code.

If you have any problems with the code that I have explained right now, then do leave me a comment and I will try my best to clarify your doubt.

The most important thing that you must have noticed here is the parameter "new". This is the magic keyword of Java and is used for creating new Objects. I will discuss more on creating a new Object in my later posts.

I hope the article was helpful in explaining you about What is a Class. If you like this article then do leave a comment. For more information on Java, keep buzzing Java Code Online.

Want to ask Autodesk a Question

Selasa, 11 Maret 2014

My last post, Does Autodesk Listen to its Users?, asked you if you thought Autodesk listens to its users, as the title implies. If you havent already, participate in the poll. Select the percentage that you feel Autodesk does listen at.

I want to steal (I mean borrow) another idea from Steve Johnson and give you a chance to ask Autodesk a question.

Keep it reasonable, and like Steve said, they wont be able to answer pricing questions. But what do you want to know? Release cycle issues, major bugs, whats in store for AutoCAD, Revit, Civil3D, etc.

I am going to San Francisco in two days for a meeting with Autodesk. There will be many bloggers there, members of the press, and Autodesk officials. I will be able to speak with several officials, so if you have a simple enough question post it here as a comment and I will see what I can find out. I can not make any promises except that I will try. I know, there is no try, only do or do not, but I will see what I can do!

What do you want to know?

How will you go about explaining the following Java concepts to a beginner

Minggu, 09 Februari 2014

Q. How will you go about explaining the following Java concepts to a beginner who is starting to learn Java
A.

1. Process Vs Threads
2. Heap versus Stack
3. Local variables versus instance variables
4. How do threads communicate with each other?
5. Are Java methods reentrant?
6. Does Java support recursive method calls?
7. Object creation and Garbage collection
8. Can you garbage collect objects that have a circular reference?
9. Producer-consumer design pattern.

The best way to do this is to write some basic code and then have a pictorial representation as to how the objects are created, how do threads work and communicate with each other, and what is stored in a heap and what is stored in a stack, etc.

Here is an example of a producer thread (thread-0) producing by incrementing the counter from 0, and the consumer thread (i.e. thread-1) consumes by decrementng the counter. These two user created threads are spawned by the main thread, which is created by the JVM and is alwyas there by default. The ConsumerProducer is the shared object with synchronized methods that commuincate with each other via wait( ) and notifyAll methods. Only one of the two synchronized methods can be executed at a time. The wait( ) call in consume( ) relinquishes the lock to the produce( ) method, and once the produce method has incremented the count, it notifies all threads and one of the waiting threads will resume. In this example, there is only one waiting consumer (i.e. Thread-1) thread. So, both threads will be communicating with each other via the wait( ) and notifyAll( ) calls in the shared object ConsumerProducer. This is an example of the producer-consumer design pattern.

Firstly, look at the code and then the diagram. The diagram is simplified to get an understanding and should not be construed as exactly what happens in the JVM.

public class ConsumerProducer {

private int count;

public synchronized void consume() {
while (count == 0) { // keep waiting if nothing is produced to consume
try {
wait(); // give up lock and wait
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
// keep trying
}
}

count--; // consume
System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName() + " after consuming " + count);
}

public synchronized void produce() {
count++; //produce
System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName() + " after producing " + count);
notifyAll(); // notify waiting threads to resume
}

}

The main thread spawns a consumer and a producer thread. The ConsumerProducer is shared between two threads. The boolean flag is used to signal if it is a consumer thread or a producer thread to invoke the relevant methods.

public class ConsumerProducerTest implements Runnable {

boolean isConsumer;
ConsumerProducer cp;

public ConsumerProducerTest(boolean isConsumer, ConsumerProducer cp) {
this.isConsumer = isConsumer;
this.cp = cp;
}

public static void main(String[] args) {
ConsumerProducer cp = new ConsumerProducer(); //shared by both threads to communicate

Thread producer = new Thread(new ConsumerProducerTest(false, cp));
Thread consumer = new Thread(new ConsumerProducerTest(true, cp));

producer.start();
consumer.start();

}

@Override
public void run() {
for (int i = 1; i <= 10; i++) {
if (!isConsumer) {
cp.produce();
} else {
cp.consume();
}
}

//try with introducing a sleep for 100ms.

}
}

The output will vary, but the last thing consumed will be 0
Thread-0 after producing 1
Thread-0 after producing 2
Thread-0 after producing 3
Thread-0 after producing 4
Thread-0 after producing 5
Thread-0 after producing 6
Thread-0 after producing 7
Thread-0 after producing 8
Thread-0 after producing 9
Thread-0 after producing 10
Thread-1 after consuming 9
Thread-1 after consuming 8
Thread-1 after consuming 7
Thread-1 after consuming 6
Thread-1 after consuming 5
Thread-1 after consuming 4
Thread-1 after consuming 3
Thread-1 after consuming 2
Thread-1 after consuming 1
Thread-1 after consuming 0

The above code can be diagramatically represented as shown below.

  • The JVM is a process. As you could see in the diagram above that each thread has its own stack, but share the same heap space. One heap space per process.

  • The local variables like producer, cp, and consumer are stored in the stack along with the method calls like main( ), run( ), etc.

  • The objects are created in the heap. For example, 2 instances of ConsumerProducerTest and a single instance of ConsumerProducer. Unless the methods of these instances are properly managed, multiple threads can concurrently access these intsnaces to cause thread-safety issues.

  • There are scenarios where the threads want to commuincate with each other. For example, a worker thread produces something and a consumer thread consumes what the producer thread consumed. This can be achieved through thread coordination with the wait and notify( ) / notifyAll( ) methods. In the above example, since both the produce( ) and consume( ) methods of the object ConsumerProducer are synchronized, only one thread can execute either one of the methods. If the count == 0, the consumer thread relinquishes the lock by invoking the wait( ) method and waits for it to be notified again to resume. The producer thread will increment the counter and then will notify all the waiting threads via the notifyAll( ) method. One of the waiting threads will then be able to resume from its waiting state.

  • The local variable isConsumer is used to differentiate between a consumer thread and a producer thread.

  • The count is an instance variable shared by both the consumer and producer thread in a thread-safe manner.

Here are the points that answers the above questions.

  • Each time an object is created in Java it goes into the area of memory known as heap.
  • The primitive variables like int, double, etc are allocated in the stack if they are local variables and in the heap if they are instance variables (i.e. fields of a class).
  • Java is a stack based language and local variables are pushed into stack when a method is invoked and stack pointer is decremented when a method call is completed.
  • In a multi-threaded application, each thread will have its own stack but will share the same heap. This is why care should be taken in your code to avoid any concurrent access issues in the heap space.
  • The stack is thread-safe because each thread will have its own stack with say 1MB RAM allocated for each thread but the heap is not thread-safe unless guarded with synchronization through your code. The stack space can be increased with the –Xss option.
  • All Java methods are automatically re-entrant. It means that several threads can be executing the same method at once, each with its own copy of the local variables.
  • A Java method may call itself without needing any special declarations. This is known as a recursive method call. Given enough stack space, recursive method calls are perfectly valid in Java though it is tough to debug. Recursive methods are useful in removing iterations from many sorts of algorithms. All recursive functions are re-entrant but not all re-entrant functions are recursive.
  • Idempotent methods are methods, which are written in such a way that repeated calls to the same method with the same arguments yield same results.
  • Each time an object is created in Java, it goes into the area of memory known as heap. The Java heap is called the garbage collectable heap. The garbage collection cannot be forced. The garbage collector runs in low memory situations. When it runs, it releases the memory allocated by an unreachable object. The garbage collector runs on a low priority daemon (i.e. background thread). You can nicely ask the garbage collector to collect garbage by calling System.gc( ) but you can’t force it.
  • An object’s life has no meaning unless something has reference to it. If you can’t reach it then you can’t ask it to do anything. Then the object becomes unreachable and the garbage collector will figure it out. Java automatically collects all the unreachable objects periodically and releases the memory consumed by those unreachable objects to be used by the future reachable objects.
  • If two objects have circular reference with each other in the heap, but none of them are reachable from any thread, then those circular referenced objects can be garbage collected.

Why become a Java freelancer

Sabtu, 01 Februari 2014

You may also like:
This was written as a general discussion only. The terminologies may  differ in other countries. Check the tax laws and contractual agreements carefully in your jurisdiction.

Q. How many years of experience do you need before becoming a freelancer or a contractor?
A. Generally 2 to 5 years.

Q. Why work as a freelancer?
A.
  • Better pay.  Usually, 1.5 to 2 times the permanent staff. So, you can take some time off to travel or work on your passive income generating ideas.
  • Gives you more freedom, and opportunity to acquire wider range of skills. You will have better control of your career direction by carefully choosing your contracts. Ask the right questions at your job interviews.
  • Dont have to get involved with the company politics. Do your job well, and build your network to find your future contracts directly without having to go through the job agencies.
  • Gets you out of your comfort zone to explore other opportunities and acquire new skills.
  • Overall gives you the professional (and  possibly financial) freedom.

Q. What are the disadvantages or risks of working as a freelancer or contractor?
A.
  • Job security risk as your income can be unstable, especially in a difficult job market. This is more true for freelancers than contractors. This is where working on your passive income generating ideas become handy. I tend to start looking for new contracts around 6 weeks prior to my current contract expires.
  • You may have to do additional paperwork as part of insurance (e.g. professional indemnity insurance) and tax requirements. You will also be under different type of scrutiny when you apply for loans as you will have to provide evidence that you have a steady income. I go through an umbrella company as their employee for a nominal fee of 3% of my rate. This not only frees me from any administrative tasks to concentrate more on what I enjoy doing, but also makes it easier to apply for loans.
  • Freelancers also run the risk of not getting paid. This is not much of a problem for the contractors unless they work for a start up or a company that is in a brink of receivership.  Do your research on the company.
  • You also dont have the benefits like health benefits, sick pay, holiday pay, etc. But, this can be compensated in your regular rate.
  • You need to regularly prepare for your job interviews.

Q. Why a contractor or freelancer is paid more than permanent developers?
A.
  • cost to a company for a permanent employee with benefits can be 1.5 to 2.5 times the amount they see in their pay check
  • As a compensation for short term or temporary nature of the assignment.  Freelancers or contractors can be easily hired and fired.
  • To attract specialized and wide range of skills. Companies can hire contractors for 3 reasons.  Aim for reason number 3 described in the next answer.
Q. Why do organizations hire freelancers or contractors?
A. For 3 main reasons outlined below.

1. to get someone to do some dirty or non-interesting work that  their permanent staff is not too keen to perform.

2. to get some additional work force on a temporary basis to get the project over the line as it is not always possible to predict workload.

3. to get expertise, which lacks in the current team. For example, get a Java developer with drools experience, etc. So, as a contractor or freelancer, if you have Java experience with some niche skills like a commercial BPM framework like IBM Websphere Lombardi, Business Intelligence (BI) software like IBM Cognos or in-memory data grid like Oracle Coherence. In the third scenario, you can call yourself more a "consultant" than a contractor.
    When you get multiple job offers to choose from, favor offers that provide Java/JEE + a sought-after commercial product experience like  a BPM (e.g. Pegasystems), SOA (Oracle Service Bus), Business Intelligence (IBM Cognos BI),  BigData (e.g. Hadoop), etc as these skills and experience cannot be self-taught like Spring or Hibernate. Specialized skills are more sought-after.

    Q. Is there a difference between a Java contractor and a Java freelancer?
    A. Even though these terms are used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference.

    A contractor:  generally works for one client on an exclusive basis for a longer term say 3 to 12 months. Contractual agreements may prohibit you to work for other clients. You will get paid on an hourly or daily rate, and rates are generally 1.5 to 2 times the equivalent permanent role.You normally work at the clients location. You can find contract jobs through recruitment agencies, job advertisements or your network. This tends to have more security and steady income than a freelancer.

    A freelancer: generally works for multiple clients on a project by project basis for shorter period. You normally work at your location and visit the client office as needed. You will have to find your work on your own. You could even have overseas clients. There are popular websites like the ones listed below to bid for work. Handy to gain some extra income while gaining much needed hands-on experience.
    You can’t just jump on a freelance website and expect to pull jobs that will give you a good steady income. These are low-dollar markets as you will be competing with people around the world. Especially with people who are prepared to do the job for very low wages to gain much needed hands-on experience or to supplement their more permanent incomes. If your main focus is to gain more practical experience, then this is not a bad avenue.

    A volunteer: sole purpose is to gain much needed hands-on experience with a nominal pay or no pay. Good for beginners, and smaller businesses, charities, and community groups are more likely  to offer volunteer jobs.

    Freelancing means professional freedom, but it also means instability and the risk of failure. But if you risk your stability for something more in tune with your professional goals than a traditional job, you have the opportunity to build your name and reputation and reap more rewards.  You are the best person to decide what is best for you.

    "If you do not take risks, you will never accomplish anything."
      I have been working as a Java freelancer since 2003 and always found jobs one after another. I have shared my experience as to how you can become a freelancer (or a contractor) and what you can do to mitigate the risk. I use the term freelancer to be more of a contractor to work between 3 to 12 months for the same client.

      Disclaimer: This is a general discussion only. It is imperative that you consult your accountant for relevant business structure and tax laws in your jurisdiction.

      How to earn more as a Java developer?
      Always look beyond salary or rate when considering your options. Dont base your happiness on money alone. Job satisfaction and opportunity to grow further are equally important. Firstly, find something that you really enjoy doing., then see what happens ............
