Understanding Business Voip Providers Chicago And The Advantages Of Internet Phone Systems

Rabu, 16 Juli 2014

By Jerri Perry

Phone Hosted PBX is the rave of corporate telephone communication. Corporates of all sizes are making the switch from traditional phone service to the feature-rich, low-cost option of the business VoIP providers Chicago. The general acceptance and popularity of hosted Phone has resulted in the development of fierce competition among service providers.

To contend, Phone providers are constantly finding innovative ways to offer even more services to corporates. This translates to a host of integration options that corporates can use to streamline their communications. The two most important types of corporate communications are phone and email. These both enable corporates to stay in close contact with their clients. The integration of Microsoft Outlook and Web Browsers into Phone systems centralizes corporate communication with the following options. They are as shown below

There are two major reasons why upgrading your corporate phone system is more important than the hundred other corporate systems or processes you could pour your money into. Upgrading your corporate PBX system will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your current telephony operations. Thus providing you with countless small improvements in the flow and quality of your operations every single day.

These phones provide many of the same features that traditional phone companies offer, as well as some that are unique to the technology. Caller ID, conference calling, call transfers, hold capability, and a form of speed dial are all available. In addition, many phones also offer users a variety of different applications that can provide live news, current weather forecasts, and other data.

The fax integration into Phone systems allows you to receive faxes and phone calls at the same time and using the same number. Also one can receive faxed documents as an attachment that you can share with other people in your organization. Thus it is possible to access faxed documents from wherever you are able to receive Phone service. Not to mention, it is easy to share confidential documents with your clients or other employees in the organization.

The better your employees can handle incoming calls, the greater the satisfaction you will provide your clients. In addition, improved office phone system offers your employees and your clients high quality, highly stable connections to communicate over. The benefits of an improved phone system extend well beyond simply improving those metrics and variables which your company is already aware of.

This option is an extension of the call forwarding feature and offers corporates. There is call redirection to a mobile device so you do not miss calls when you are away from your office phone. There is also the seamless connection to all employees in the organization regardless of their location. One can also access to client contact information stored in phone system.

While corporates ventures to be more centralized communication, business VoIP providers Chicago are responding with more and more integration options. These options are helping to improve corporate communications. Hence continuing to shrink the gap between small and large corporates.

The Usual Verdict On Kindle Fire Updates

Kamis, 19 Juni 2014

By Mishu Hull

Amazons Kindle Fire from the start has been situated as the budget tablet. Its specs rarely are found to measure up to those of its competitors, but the price, the current edition offered at $229, is so appealing it has managed to leverage a spot in the market.

When the holiday season comes in sight, we naturally expect a new splash from electronics producers and Amazon hasnt let us down there. There are some redesigned features, including the operating system, which is pretty much Android Light. Also, some people are going to quite dig the brand new Mayday feature. As discussed below, this new feature provides free, single button access to a live service rep.

Hopes for dramatic improvements in the Kindle Fires functions and capacity, though, will be sadly letdown. The improvements are minimal in the third-generation model. Actually, some might even think the situation worse than that. Though the system is based on the Google Android the new owners of the Kindle Fire find themselves lacking in all the great Google apps and services that the standard Android user enjoys.

Instead, the new Kindle Fire owner has to download his or her apps from Amazon. (This includes, by the way, activating the Flash Player , which does not come activated, to the annoyance of many users.) The selection of apps is paltry in comparison to that available on the standard Android. Were talking around 85,000 apps compared to nearly a million for Android. Of course that also means youre missing a lot of stuff that many people value highly: e.g., Google Maps, Gmail, and YouTube.

This brings us to another annoying feature of the Kindle Fire HDX, like its predecessor, its constantly trying to sell you goods from Amazon. If you hold your mouse over anything - app, book, video, whatever - your friendly Amazon salesman jumps up with a suggestion of something similar you should consider purchasing.

I find this immensely annoying and distracting. Obviously, its a matter of personal taste. Some folks, I expect, find real value in this endless exposure to new product opportunities. For me, it just gets in the way of what Im trying to do. Like commercial television, though, this is the monetizing strategy: you suffer through the ads to get the product at such a low price.

The good news is that the folks at Amazon have succeeded at reducing the rate of software bugs that caused so much trouble with previous models. It is much less glitchy. Also on the upside, it has an interesting design feature, which provides a "carousel" style view of apps, movies, books or whatever. These carousels provide a review of products or services that the Kindle user has recently accessed. Theres a navigation bar at the bottom of the screen that provides access to the entire collection of content on the Kindle Fire.

And let us not forget what some people might find the coolest feature of all. At the press of a button this Kindle Fire version provides you the Mayday service, in which you are immediately hooked up with a live service representative. The rep appears in a corner of your tablets screen and addresses any problems or concerns you have. And your little corner friend, who youll know on a first name bases, can even take control of your Kindle Fire, should that prove the most efficient manner of resolving your issue. Theres no question this is a cool feature and the commitment to customer service makes a statement

The irony of course is that the whole idea of such tablets is that they are supposed to be highly user friendly, operating in intuitive ways. So, one cant help wondering if there isnt a certain kind of confession in the provision of this service. "Well, we couldnt quite get it right, but heres our workaround." Or, maybe Im just too cynical.

The bottom line with this one, as with past versions, is that its a good buy if your intention is to restrict your usage to Amazon products and services. If thats all you want to do, this product is certainly an improvement over earlier versions. If youre just looking to save money on a tablet, you can do better .

Windows 8 Released to the World But is it Good

Kamis, 12 Juni 2014

The wait is finally over, Microsoft Windows 8 is officially here. The newest iteration of the worlds most popular computer operating system was released today after months of demos and commercials showcasing it. Microsoft has said that over 1.24 billion hours of testing went into the new operating system and is in many ways hedging the future of the company on the new release. Because of the increased pressure from Apple and Google, Microsoft wants to assure consumers that they are still relevant in todays world.

Windows 8 marks a radical change for Microsoft in terms of the layout of their operating system. Gone is the traditional start menu, replaced by an entirely new start interface with "live tiles" and an array of downloadable applications from the all new Windows Store. Current windows users will notice a drastic change from Windows 7 to Windows 8. While the traditional "desktop" is still there, it is no longer the center of the computers processes, and more of a "background application". Part of Microsofts reason for making such drastic changes to the interface is to make their operating system compatible across more devices. Microsoft is trying to not only keep hold of the traditional PC market, but also branch into tablets and smartphones. Windows 8 is truly built more for new hybrid, touch-based computers and tablets more so than traditional desktops, though it is built to run on those as well.

Having already downloaded Windows 8 to my laptop early this morning, I have only had a short time to interact with it. That being said, I noticed one thing right away, there is a steep learning curve. The interface, short of the traditional desktop which is now essentially an "app", is completely different. Even for someone that is very familiar with the way Windows computers work, navigating Windows 8 is in many ways a whole new experience. That is not to say that all is bad. I do like the modern interface that Microsoft has introduced, and I like many of the new, full screen applications that are available from the Windows Store. I also like the deep integration with all Microsoft services, if you have an email account, that allows many settings and files to be synced over the cloud.

There are, however, plenty of drawbacks, at least currently, to Windows 8. For starters, nothing is where it used to be. Just trying to turn the computer off takes multiple steps that may take users a while to figure out. Also while Windows 8 is "easy" to navigate, it is more so for a touch screen rather than a traditional computer. A traditional keyboard and mouse feel "out of place" in this new user interface, save for when working with the traditional desktop. I understand Microsoft wanting to make Windows 8 touch friendly for tablets and new touch-enabled computers, but traditional computers upgraded to the new OS feel a bit neglected. In addition, the current offering of applications in the Windows store is very limited, and until more popular applications are added, it will suffer.

Overall, my opinion of Windows 8 is still up in the air. While I think it is a must have if you are looking for a new, touch enabled PC, it is not yet a necessary upgrade for existing computers. If Microsoft continues to add new, relevant applications to its Windows Store and allows easier ways to interact with the traditional desktop, then I think it will truly be useful to everyone. It remains to be seen how the radical change in design will impact sales of the operating system, but one thing is certain right now, it is a new age for Microsoft and for the future of personal computers.

Revolutionizing The Game World What Makes The Best Games For IPAD

Sabtu, 12 April 2014

By Mishu Hull

The game industry is one of, if not, the oldest experience of computers for the general public. Pong and Pac-man blazed the way. While gaming remains a major component of the modern personal computer world, another development in that world has raised skepticism about the ability to marry the two. This second dimension of the computer world is the touch screen, characteristic of smart phones and tablets such as iPad. How much of a conflict is there really here?

Certainly, the immediate evidence would suggest such a concern is much ado about nothing. Games have been developed for touch screens: Ive compiled my list of the best games for iPad elsewhere. The fact of such games though has not been without its detractors and critics.

The usual approach is to dis such games on what seems to be the practical impracticality. To put it bluntly, they complain that touch screen games arent effective because the players fingers obstruct the view of the screen.

This may too often be true. It is though a criticism of the games designed, not the gaming potential of touch screen computers. In fact, the notion that tactile interface with the screen is problematic is itself a kind of outdated myopia. Ill suggest, on the contrary, rather than some conceptual cul-de-sac, touch screen gaming is not merely the cutting edge of gaming culture and technology, but it is a portent of human-computer interfacing of the future.

Before completely unpacking this claim, some context will be helpful. Consider the visceral pleasures of finger painting. I know many will object that serious painters use paint brushes. Fine.

Yet, we all know the joys of sticking our fingers into the paint; of using the tips of our fingers to smear, spread and shape the paint. Finger painting in a sense is almost a kind of sculpture. Kids of course notoriously love it, but even adults, given the rare occasion, if not worried about getting paint on their new dress or suit, will often be compelled to spontaneously stick in their fingers.

Contrast these pleasures to another childhood picture making medium, the Etch-n-Sketch. Of course, Im not denying it provides fun and satisfaction, too. Perhaps youll concede though it is a rather different style of pleasure: detailed in an almost obsessive-compulsive sort of fixated way. This you might agree is a world away from the raw and sensual pleasures of anyone of any age experiencing finger painting. The difference between these two experiences is immediately related to the quality of immersion. Not merely immersion in an experience, but in the medium itself.

The person finger painting, in a very real sense, is actually "in" the picture that she is painting. The painting is literally an extension of the painter and the painter an extension of the painting. If we can wrap our head about this dynamic we will understand why touch screen gaming is not only the future of gaming, but of human-computer interface. The touch screen game has the same affect of immersing the player in the game as finger painting does of immersing the painter into the painting.

The sad truth is that those who complain about the absence of buttons and joysticks, mice and keyboards, in such games make themselves just another example in a long story of those that history has left behind. They merely reveal their resentment at the sudden devaluation of the refined skills, into which they have invested so much time, energy and money, only to find their once treasured skills antiquated and obsolete.

Our technological history is littered with those who tried to mask their efforts to protect their skills investment with pretensions of principle. Photographers complaining about digital cameras, ink-stained newspaper men complaining about the internet, motion picture moguls complaining about television, big band musicians complaining about the phonograph, and horse-and-carriage operators complaining about the automobile, are just a few of so many examples. The march of progress certainly does leave its causalities. Unless though we are happy to resolve ourselves to life in a permanent past, such change is finally for the good.

And of course superior function, though real enough, isnt even the real issue. The common themes here are more immediate and accessible experiences. Think about the very first person, whoever he was, that connected speakers to his television so as to produce surround sound. Surely he didnt know it, but he was blazing a way down a path which would eventually lead to that day not so far in the future when well all experience our favorite programs as total virtual reality scenarios.

Its almost a cliche to say that we like to "lose ourselves" in our entertainment, to get "wrapped up in it." We want for a little while to leave the worries of the world behind. This deep human desire for the brief refuge of an escape into fantasy and wonder, I suspect explains why we have always pushed our entertainment technology toward the experience of immersion.

The hugely popularity of Wii illustrates the point: this sudden and mass embrace of a tactically immersive gaming experience. The immersive gaming experience of the touch screen situates the player into the game in a way reminiscent of the childhood pleasures of finger painting. Indeed, we might say that it is an essential link between those childhood pleasures of the past and the promises of our virtual reality future.

In Sci-Fi shows we see space age technology in which lights come on when given a verbal command. How much more impressive would it be though if our lights came on when we needed them, or raised their intensity when our eyes were growing tired of a task. Leading edge AI technology raises this very possibility. Immersion is the natural inclination of human-computer interface.

Seen in this context, touch screen gaming may be regarded as a transitional step into that future. Game designers who insist upon putting "consoles" on to touch screen games are being left behind by history. They are like those early film makers and recording engineers who could not see their new technologies as anything more than the means to record live performances. And being able to do that was a great accomplishment. It was of course only when the visionaries came along who could imagine cinematography and splice-editing, though, that these new technologies realized their creative and aesthetic potential.

So with game designers responding to the growing demand for games on touch screens, if they can find the organic fit with the uniquely immersive qualities of the iPad, they too can be harbingers of the future. Otherwise, theyre just lingering stragglers of the past.

How To Get The Best Bargain Whenever Buying Power Amplifiers

Senin, 31 Maret 2014

By Mike Heller

Selecting a decent amplifier for your loudspeakers is not a trivial chore. You wish to make certain that your amplifier matches your speakers. I will clarify some important amplifier terms and give some recommendations to help you select the perfect amplifier.

Audio amplifiers appear in all different shapes and sizes. They use different technologies and have many technical specs. By following some simple rules, you will be able to pick the type that best fits your application and budget.

Amplifiers vary in their size and range from types that will take up a good part of your living room whilst some of the latest mini amplifier types are as small as a deck of cards. A large number of amps are the size of a typical rack. This enables your amp to be stacked on top of your other audio equipment. The huge majority of recent audio amplifiers are solid state amplifiers versus more conventional tube amplifiers. Tube amplifiers have been dominant a decade or so ago. Regrettably, tube amps have relatively large audio distortion which describes how much the audio signal is degraded by the amplifier.

Tube amps will have audio distortion of up to 10%. Solid state amplifiers will have less audio distortion depending on the amplifier technology that is utilized. Several of the most accepted technologies in the past have been "Class-A" and "Class-AB" technologies. These technologies use different arrangements to amplify the sound. Amps based on any of these technologies are also named "analog amplifiers". While amplifiers employing these technologies normally have low audio distortion, power efficiency is only 10% to 30%. This means that the majority of the electrical power provided to the amp is wasted as heat while a tiny fraction is used to amplify the audio signal.

In comparison, "Class-D" amps which are also known as "digital amplifiers" have a power efficiency of usually 80 to 90%. This allows the amp and power supply to be made a great deal smaller than analog amplifiers. The downside is that many digital amplifiers have larger audio distortion than analog amplifiers though several of the latest types make use of a feedback mechanism to minimize distortion to levels of 0.05% and less.

"Class-D" amplifiers, on the other hand, which are also named "digital amplifiers" have a power efficiency of no less than 80% and are smaller and have a smaller power supply than similar analog amplifiers. The disadvantage is that many digital amps have larger audio distortion than analog amplifiers although some of the latest types employ a feedback mechanism to reduce distortion to levels of 0.05% and less. The amp should be able to deliver adequate output power to sufficiently drive your speakers which will depend not only on how much power your loudspeakers can handle but also on the size of your listening environment. Speaker power handling is given as peak power which describes the maximum amount of power during short bursts while average power refers to how much power the loudspeakers can handle constantly.

If you have a fairly small listening area then 20 to 50 Watts of power should be sufficient despite the fact that your loudspeaker might be rated for 100 Watts or more. Low-impedance speakers generally offer high sensitivity and are easier to drive to high volume than high-impedance loudspeakers. Be sure that your amplifier can drive your speaker impedance. You can without problems find the rated speaker impedance range in your amplifiers user manual.

Last but not least, be certain that your amplifier introduces little noise and has a broad enough frequency response. High-quality amps will have a signal-to-noise ratio of no less than 100 dB and a frequency response of a minimum of 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Recognize the sound of “BEEP on your PC

Kamis, 20 Februari 2014

Maybe you often encounter or maybe hear Beep on bios or PC.  Actually the sound is a reply message conveyed by the bios / PC to indicate a hardware error on your PC.
Here I will try to give signs or information about the BEEP sound.  But, please ensure the type of your PC bios.

AMI BIOS
Beeps 1x = > RAM is faulty or not installed properly.
Beep 6x = > usually indicates a defective keyboard, or not installed properly
Beep 8x = > Graphics card is damaged or improperly installed in the slot.
Beep 11x = > Checksum - Error.  Check the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Award BIOS
Long continuous beeps 1x = > RAM is damaged, or improperly installed.
Long beep 1x, 1x short = > There is a problem with the RAM or motherboard
Long beep 1x, 2x short = > Graphics card is damaged or not installed properly
1x long beep, short 3x = > Keyboard damaged or improperly installed
1x long beep, short 9x = > There is a problem with the Bios / Bios damaged
No cut short beeps = > There are problems with the acceptance voltage (power)

Phoenix BIOS
Beep 1x - 1x - 4x = > BIOS is damaged.
Beep 1x - 2x - 1x = > motherboard is damaged.
Beep 1x - 3x - 1x = > Ram damaged or improperly installed.
Beep 3x - 1x - 1x = > the motherboard is damaged
Beep 3x - 3x - 4x = > Graphics card is damaged or improperly installed.

If the problem is the RAM (memory) try to unplug and plug it again (if the RAM before putting poorly or does not fit or shift because the computer removable).  The same treatment can also be done on the graphics card (VGA card).  If after fixing the location of peripherals (RAM and VGA card) but the beep was still ringing, too, most likely suffered damage peripherals, it can try with other peripherals, before buying a new one.

Multiple Conflicting FireWire Enclosures from the Same Manufacturers

Rabu, 19 Februari 2014

I currently use a Titanium PowerBook as my primary computer. However, I’m also a power user and a laptop has a limited amount of upgradeability. That means I have a lot of external devices connected to my laptop using FireWire. FireWire supports 63 devices which is great for someone like me and I’m nowhere close to 63. I have three external hard drives (two 250GB 3.5” and one bus powered 30GB 2.5”), two external DVD burners (a Pioneer 109, and a Pioneer 104), one external CD-RW burner (a Plextor W4824A), and an iPod as well as a 6 port FireWire hub. That’s only 8 devices. Not very close to the limit of 63, however, when I added my latest DVD burner (the Pioneer 109), I had a lot of problems. I eventually solved them, and I’m writing down my experiences so hopefully someone can learn from my pain.

In short…
It turns out, that FireWire devices have unique IDs similar to the MAC address on Ethernet devices. Some manufacturers use the same ID on all of their devices, which causes problems if you connect two devices from the same manufacturer to your computer. My guess is the FireWire people told the manufacturers they needed to supply unique IDs, however, somewhere along the line, that information didn’t make it to the assembly line personnel.

I’ve seen this problem with enclosures from Plumax and Acomdata and I’m sure many other manufacturers out there are doing this as well. I can also say for certain that the Mercury Elite Pro 3.5” enclosures do not suffer from this problem, as I’ve been using two identical ones for a while without fail. In fact, these are my favorite FireWire 3.5” enclosures, and I highly recommend them. You can get them here:
Other World Computing

I’ll describe how I fixed the problem below by manually changing the FireWire ID. I spent most of the time trying to isolate the problem, and then reading detailed specifications about the Oxford FireWire bridge chipsets (thanks to Oxford making their information available for download in PDF format!). But I’m getting ahead of myself.

First of all, this applies to enclosures that use the Oxford FireWire chipsets. I believe it applies to 911, 911+, 912, and 922 chipsets. Although I specifically was working with 911+ and 912. If you have an enclosure that uses a different chipset, such as Prolific, I don’t know how to help you. I’ve worked with enough enclosures to know that when you are shopping, you want to make sure you get one that has an Oxford chipset in it. All other brands have received reports of bugs and data corruption issues, that I ignored, until I lost data that I was able to trace back to a problem with the Prolific chipset. Since then, I will only buy Oxford (I should write another entry just covering that experience!) There are probably ways to do this for the other chipsets, I just don’t know what it is. I believe Prolific, and Initio are the other FireWire chipsets. Not sure of any other brands.

Second, flashing or modifying firmware can toast your enclosure. For some reason while following the instructions that worked previously and using the same flash software, I erased a 911+ chipset, and was never able to upload a new firmware to it, rendering the enclosure unusable. If anyone knows how to revive a 911+ that claims it’s ready to be flashed, but just seems to ignore the flash, contact me. So standard disclaimer…you do this at your own risk.

This should apply to Windows as well as Mac or Linux and other supported Unix computers. The flash software I’m going to discuss is Java based, so it’s cross platform. How Oxford got a Java app to access FireWire hardware is beyond me, unless they are imbedding some OS specific binaries in there. If someone from Oxford Semiconductors wants to contact me, I’d love to chat!

Ok, so let’s assume, you’ve purchased two new identical model enclosures for those two new drives you just got. And you’ve found, like I did, that whenever both of them were connected and powered on, your computer had a terrible time talking to them. Some of the symptoms were:
Incomplete directory listings
Long pauses when accessing either drive
One drive never mounting/showing up on the desktop
And occasionally, when I told one drive (a DVD drive) to eject, it would eject the other drive. It was at that point I realized that the computer wasn’t able to tell the drives apart.

Basically there are two reasons to muck with your firmware. You can upgrade to the latest version (which was my goal at first, although that didn’t solve my problems) and you can also edit some of the “advanced settings” of the drives, which are stored in the flash memory as well. It’s worth noting, that you can update the settings in flash memory without actually flashing a new firmware, which makes changing the settings a bit less risky than uploading new firmware.

Now that you’ve identified the problematic enclosures, and verified that they are running Oxford chipsets, it’s time to start getting some software that lets us mess around with the internals. I found the software by searching in many places, and was able to verify the latest version, at this time 1.64, was here:
Cool Drives FireWire Info
Specifically, the 1.64 Java updater/uploader/cloner apps for Mac OS X:
uploader_164.zip
Since it’s Java you would think that would work on Windows too, however they list a separate Windows version here:
windows_uploader.zip

Ok, if you want to get some more recent firmware you can get it from links I supply below. When I download the flash apps, they didn’t usually include the firmware files, although they had directories where you could put your own.

Anyway, they recommend that you disconnect all other FireWire devices except the one you want to work with. I just powered them down, so the only things that were active were my FireWire hub and the drive I wanted to mess with.

Then I launched the uploadergui.jar file.

Right away this found my Oxford based drive, and brought up the firmware information on it. It looked like this:

I then clicked the Modify Configuration button. If that button is grayed out, make sure you launched uploadergui.jar and NOT updatergui.jar. You should see something like this after clicking the Modify Configuration button:

Note the all important Chip ID Hi and Chip ID Lo fields. The reason I even thought to start messing with them, is because the other app that came with the uploader is called the clonergui.jar. It’s designed to take the already flashed firmware from one device and propagate it to other identical devices. It stresses that every time it uploads a clone, that it will increment the chip id by 1 for every device it flashes. Unfortunately, it didn’t make it clear to me if it only changed the Chip ID Hi or Lo or both fields. I’m guessing it simply added 1 to the hex value in the Chip ID Lo field. To be safe, I modified the values in both fields, just changing a number in each position and incrementing it by a value of one. So for example, I think Chip ID Hi, was 02, so I changed it to 03. If someone wants to clarify the usage of the Hi and Lo values, feel free to contact me. Anyway, after changing both values, I simply clicked the Upload Changes button. After that, everything started working. Obviously I only had to change that value for one of the drives, and could keep the other drive at its factory default.

While this sounds pretty simple now, it took me a lot of research to find all this information. None of it was sitting in one place. Hopefully this entry will help someone else out in the same situation. And maybe more importantly, Plumax will start making their Chip IDs unique.

How will you go about explaining the following Java concepts to a beginner

Minggu, 09 Februari 2014

Q. How will you go about explaining the following Java concepts to a beginner who is starting to learn Java
A.

1. Process Vs Threads
2. Heap versus Stack
3. Local variables versus instance variables
4. How do threads communicate with each other?
5. Are Java methods reentrant?
6. Does Java support recursive method calls?
7. Object creation and Garbage collection
8. Can you garbage collect objects that have a circular reference?
9. Producer-consumer design pattern.

The best way to do this is to write some basic code and then have a pictorial representation as to how the objects are created, how do threads work and communicate with each other, and what is stored in a heap and what is stored in a stack, etc.

Here is an example of a producer thread (thread-0) producing by incrementing the counter from 0, and the consumer thread (i.e. thread-1) consumes by decrementng the counter. These two user created threads are spawned by the main thread, which is created by the JVM and is alwyas there by default. The ConsumerProducer is the shared object with synchronized methods that commuincate with each other via wait( ) and notifyAll methods. Only one of the two synchronized methods can be executed at a time. The wait( ) call in consume( ) relinquishes the lock to the produce( ) method, and once the produce method has incremented the count, it notifies all threads and one of the waiting threads will resume. In this example, there is only one waiting consumer (i.e. Thread-1) thread. So, both threads will be communicating with each other via the wait( ) and notifyAll( ) calls in the shared object ConsumerProducer. This is an example of the producer-consumer design pattern.

Firstly, look at the code and then the diagram. The diagram is simplified to get an understanding and should not be construed as exactly what happens in the JVM.

public class ConsumerProducer {

private int count;

public synchronized void consume() {
while (count == 0) { // keep waiting if nothing is produced to consume
try {
wait(); // give up lock and wait
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
// keep trying
}
}

count--; // consume
System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName() + " after consuming " + count);
}

public synchronized void produce() {
count++; //produce
System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName() + " after producing " + count);
notifyAll(); // notify waiting threads to resume
}

}

The main thread spawns a consumer and a producer thread. The ConsumerProducer is shared between two threads. The boolean flag is used to signal if it is a consumer thread or a producer thread to invoke the relevant methods.

public class ConsumerProducerTest implements Runnable {

boolean isConsumer;
ConsumerProducer cp;

public ConsumerProducerTest(boolean isConsumer, ConsumerProducer cp) {
this.isConsumer = isConsumer;
this.cp = cp;
}

public static void main(String[] args) {
ConsumerProducer cp = new ConsumerProducer(); //shared by both threads to communicate

Thread producer = new Thread(new ConsumerProducerTest(false, cp));
Thread consumer = new Thread(new ConsumerProducerTest(true, cp));

producer.start();
consumer.start();

}

@Override
public void run() {
for (int i = 1; i <= 10; i++) {
if (!isConsumer) {
cp.produce();
} else {
cp.consume();
}
}

//try with introducing a sleep for 100ms.

}
}

The output will vary, but the last thing consumed will be 0
Thread-0 after producing 1
Thread-0 after producing 2
Thread-0 after producing 3
Thread-0 after producing 4
Thread-0 after producing 5
Thread-0 after producing 6
Thread-0 after producing 7
Thread-0 after producing 8
Thread-0 after producing 9
Thread-0 after producing 10
Thread-1 after consuming 9
Thread-1 after consuming 8
Thread-1 after consuming 7
Thread-1 after consuming 6
Thread-1 after consuming 5
Thread-1 after consuming 4
Thread-1 after consuming 3
Thread-1 after consuming 2
Thread-1 after consuming 1
Thread-1 after consuming 0

The above code can be diagramatically represented as shown below.

  • The JVM is a process. As you could see in the diagram above that each thread has its own stack, but share the same heap space. One heap space per process.

  • The local variables like producer, cp, and consumer are stored in the stack along with the method calls like main( ), run( ), etc.

  • The objects are created in the heap. For example, 2 instances of ConsumerProducerTest and a single instance of ConsumerProducer. Unless the methods of these instances are properly managed, multiple threads can concurrently access these intsnaces to cause thread-safety issues.

  • There are scenarios where the threads want to commuincate with each other. For example, a worker thread produces something and a consumer thread consumes what the producer thread consumed. This can be achieved through thread coordination with the wait and notify( ) / notifyAll( ) methods. In the above example, since both the produce( ) and consume( ) methods of the object ConsumerProducer are synchronized, only one thread can execute either one of the methods. If the count == 0, the consumer thread relinquishes the lock by invoking the wait( ) method and waits for it to be notified again to resume. The producer thread will increment the counter and then will notify all the waiting threads via the notifyAll( ) method. One of the waiting threads will then be able to resume from its waiting state.

  • The local variable isConsumer is used to differentiate between a consumer thread and a producer thread.

  • The count is an instance variable shared by both the consumer and producer thread in a thread-safe manner.

Here are the points that answers the above questions.

  • Each time an object is created in Java it goes into the area of memory known as heap.
  • The primitive variables like int, double, etc are allocated in the stack if they are local variables and in the heap if they are instance variables (i.e. fields of a class).
  • Java is a stack based language and local variables are pushed into stack when a method is invoked and stack pointer is decremented when a method call is completed.
  • In a multi-threaded application, each thread will have its own stack but will share the same heap. This is why care should be taken in your code to avoid any concurrent access issues in the heap space.
  • The stack is thread-safe because each thread will have its own stack with say 1MB RAM allocated for each thread but the heap is not thread-safe unless guarded with synchronization through your code. The stack space can be increased with the –Xss option.
  • All Java methods are automatically re-entrant. It means that several threads can be executing the same method at once, each with its own copy of the local variables.
  • A Java method may call itself without needing any special declarations. This is known as a recursive method call. Given enough stack space, recursive method calls are perfectly valid in Java though it is tough to debug. Recursive methods are useful in removing iterations from many sorts of algorithms. All recursive functions are re-entrant but not all re-entrant functions are recursive.
  • Idempotent methods are methods, which are written in such a way that repeated calls to the same method with the same arguments yield same results.
  • Each time an object is created in Java, it goes into the area of memory known as heap. The Java heap is called the garbage collectable heap. The garbage collection cannot be forced. The garbage collector runs in low memory situations. When it runs, it releases the memory allocated by an unreachable object. The garbage collector runs on a low priority daemon (i.e. background thread). You can nicely ask the garbage collector to collect garbage by calling System.gc( ) but you can’t force it.
  • An object’s life has no meaning unless something has reference to it. If you can’t reach it then you can’t ask it to do anything. Then the object becomes unreachable and the garbage collector will figure it out. Java automatically collects all the unreachable objects periodically and releases the memory consumed by those unreachable objects to be used by the future reachable objects.
  • If two objects have circular reference with each other in the heap, but none of them are reachable from any thread, then those circular referenced objects can be garbage collected.

Norton Antivirus The Major in Antivirus Industry

Rabu, 05 Februari 2014

Selecting an antivirusprogram, such as Norton, isnt a process that you should take gently for your PC. Trojan malware, malware, and innovative malware technology designed by online hackers and criminals are regularly trying to get onto and take over your program. In this feeling, the internet can be a terrifying place as you never know what type of malware will be launched next. Norton is an antivirus program that not only works with the newest Ms operating-system, such as both 32- and 64-bit editions of Microsoft windows 7 and Microsoft windows vista, but also has many features that every PC should use for security. When we talk about antivirus support, Norton comes to the rescue in the best manner possible.

Basically, Norton is able to protect your software applications and prevent Trojan malware, and virus, three key items of malware that essentially all antivirus programs prevent. Norton also prevents malware, crawlers, and even rootkits, which are basically brilliant items of malware that covers from you the fact that your PC has been affected. Not all antivirus programs prevent rootkits, which is why Norton is different and more innovative.

One major attribute of Nortonis its advantage for the end user. Norton has an intelligence-driven checking technological innovation that the program uses. Instead of getting up your PCs time doing full tests at every function, Norton uses this special technological innovation to only check out information that may be at risk. While other programs may execute "quick scans" which only check out certain described segments of your hard drive, Norton Antivirus uses the information acquired from your program to find out which information must be examined and examined for risks. In addition, customers have complete control over the Norton scans. For best performance and getting the advice of computer experts, its always best to set up your malware tests during initial program start-ups, something which the Norton program allows you to do.

Two new ideas and functions presented by Symantec and involved with Norton Antivirus are its Obtain, Computer file, and Risk Understanding rights. These functions give you inside information into recently downloaded information and applications before you set up, run, or start them. Norton informs you by taking up a small, discreet concept whether or not the system or program youve downloadable is safe. Moreover, the system functions a threat evaluation to help you figure out whether you want to continue in your downloads set up or operating.
