Understanding Business Voip Providers Chicago And The Advantages Of Internet Phone Systems

Rabu, 16 Juli 2014

By Jerri Perry

Phone Hosted PBX is the rave of corporate telephone communication. Corporates of all sizes are making the switch from traditional phone service to the feature-rich, low-cost option of the business VoIP providers Chicago. The general acceptance and popularity of hosted Phone has resulted in the development of fierce competition among service providers.

To contend, Phone providers are constantly finding innovative ways to offer even more services to corporates. This translates to a host of integration options that corporates can use to streamline their communications. The two most important types of corporate communications are phone and email. These both enable corporates to stay in close contact with their clients. The integration of Microsoft Outlook and Web Browsers into Phone systems centralizes corporate communication with the following options. They are as shown below

There are two major reasons why upgrading your corporate phone system is more important than the hundred other corporate systems or processes you could pour your money into. Upgrading your corporate PBX system will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your current telephony operations. Thus providing you with countless small improvements in the flow and quality of your operations every single day.

These phones provide many of the same features that traditional phone companies offer, as well as some that are unique to the technology. Caller ID, conference calling, call transfers, hold capability, and a form of speed dial are all available. In addition, many phones also offer users a variety of different applications that can provide live news, current weather forecasts, and other data.

The fax integration into Phone systems allows you to receive faxes and phone calls at the same time and using the same number. Also one can receive faxed documents as an attachment that you can share with other people in your organization. Thus it is possible to access faxed documents from wherever you are able to receive Phone service. Not to mention, it is easy to share confidential documents with your clients or other employees in the organization.

The better your employees can handle incoming calls, the greater the satisfaction you will provide your clients. In addition, improved office phone system offers your employees and your clients high quality, highly stable connections to communicate over. The benefits of an improved phone system extend well beyond simply improving those metrics and variables which your company is already aware of.

This option is an extension of the call forwarding feature and offers corporates. There is call redirection to a mobile device so you do not miss calls when you are away from your office phone. There is also the seamless connection to all employees in the organization regardless of their location. One can also access to client contact information stored in phone system.

While corporates ventures to be more centralized communication, business VoIP providers Chicago are responding with more and more integration options. These options are helping to improve corporate communications. Hence continuing to shrink the gap between small and large corporates.

Technical Blogging Tips 1 million page views and lessons learned in technical blogging

Sabtu, 07 Juni 2014

Firstly, thanks to all my followers and readers for your support in reaching this milestone of 1 million page views.

Here are a few technical blogging tips based on my experience.

1. You need to be patient and keep at it

It took me around 9 months to go from 100 to 4000 daily page views. It was a gradual and slow process, and  I promoted my site via publishing articles at www.javalobby.com and helping out fellow professionals via industry specific forums like www.javaranch.com. Paid attention to Google key words that are not highly competitive and ensured that my contents had the key words to come up on google search for key words like "Java interview questions". The Google analytics revealed the following growth.

2. Sign-up to Google, and get the right tools

-- track your progress and gather metrics (e.g. Google analytics)
-- Sign up for Google adsense  to earn a small passive income.
-- Feedburner to enable your readers to subscribe to your bog feeds.
-- Google+ to network with your followers.

3. Pay attention to "repeated visitors" and "bounce rate" in Google analytics

Google analytics is a great tool to monitor how well your blog is doing. Two of the key metrics that I constantly look at are

The number of returning or repeated visitors. The slow and steady increase in this number indicates that you are getting some loyal readers who like reading your blog posts.

Jan 2012: 2,825
Feb 2012: 4,007
March 2012: 7,131
April 2012: 10, 321
May 2012: 14,304
June 2012: 19,122
July 2012: 22, 327
Aug 2012: 24, 390
Sep 2012: 25, 994

The "bounce rate" needs to be kept around  70% or less

You cant please everyone who comes to your site. Make sure that the landing page is interesting and informative enough to keep the bounce rate below 70%. If the bounce rate is high, then the problems may include irrelevant information, poor design or that your campaign is targeting unqualified visitors, too many advertisements putting people off, the content is not unique enough and freely available in many other sites, etc. You need to come up with an idea that will differentiate both your site and your content from others in the same niche. Not easy, but possible. For example, there are so many matured sites on "Java Tutorials" and very hard to compete on. The small number of tutorials provided in this blog are mainly to provide some familiarity with the sought-after technologies and frameworks.The real differentiating factor for this site is proving quality Java job interview questions with concise and easy to grasp answers.

4. Use the social media like "Facebook" and "Google+" to network and stay in touch with your readers.

It is vital to network and stay in touch with your readers and fellow professionals to open more doors. Help others and ask for feedback as to how you can improve the quality of your blog posts. Learn the problems faced by your followers and provide solution. Nothing beats the "word by mouth" marketing.

5. Sign up for "google adsense" and "infolinks" advertisements to earn a small pocket money

Dont place any advertisements until you get around 5000+ repeated visitors. Once you get enough repeated visitors you can sign up for "google adsense" and "infolinks" advertisements to be placed. Dont over do it as too many advertisements can annoy your readers. Generally, vertical and horizontal banners perform better. Set up custom adsense channels to see which advertisements are doing better. Dont expect too much from these advertisements, but can be a good passive pocket money in the order of $6.0 to $20.0 per 4000 page views.

6. The main reason for blogging is to open more doors in other areas

As an independent contractor, my blog helps me capture my experience and stay relevant.

Q. Why capture myexperience?
A.

  • Firstly, it will serve as handy notes for my future references.
  • Secondly, I can refresh or jog my memory prior to job interviews to provide a more convincing answers to open-ended questions like -- tell me about yourself? what are your strengths? give me an example where you applied your problem solving skills? what are your recent accomplishments?
  • Finally, my blog contents can potentially become an inspiration to self-publish my own book. Publishing my own book has never been easier with the advent of POD (Print On Demand) publishers like createspace.com, lulu.com, etc.

It also gives me an opportunity to network. Some of my past and current employers have read my blog posts, and it has certainly helped me win new contracts. Also, it has improved my researching and written skills. In future, if you have a reasonable size followers, you could promote other products and services. You can increase your understanding of the fundamentals from relevant questions and intelligent doubts raised by your readers.

7. People dont have whole day to read your blog posts

So, it needs to be short and sweet. The headings need to be catchy and informative. For example, I have come across some catchy titles like "How I taught my dog polymorphism", "I quit my job today, and so should you", etc.  It needs to be laid out well enough to navigate between topics. Add diagrams and code snippets where applicable.  Consult the "google  key words tool" to optimize your blog titles for SEO.

8. You need to consistently post blog entries, and cant afford to be complacent.

The times that I had been a bit slack in posting new blog posts, my google search rank had dropped. Currently, I have about 135 blog entries. Post about 2 to 4 per week. Dont post multiple entries the same day. One entry per day. The way the SEO works for the blog posts, it not only looks at the backlinks and the key word concentration, but also the reader involvement in terms of the number of comments posted, site popularity with repeated visits, etc.

Positives To Take From Project Management Software For Architects And Engineers

Kamis, 05 Juni 2014

By Jaclyn Hurley

In any technical field, the most daunting task is designing layouts of any kind for a project to suit given specifications. Through the help of project management software for architects and engineers for example, there is a simple realization of these facts without exaggerated efforts. Thus, the extra energy could go unto other components of that mission, which would require such attention.

Before starting on any project, there has to exist some form of acceptable level in terms of understanding what is and what is not possible. This is the sole purpose of strategy, an incorporated characteristic of this program. By allowing an individual to make a choice on what they do or do not want, it helps creates a preview of the most efficient and accurate model possible.With this part safely done away with, the rest come in smoothly in succession.

In order to run any system understandably and with little maintenance, then there needs to be an organized set of procedures. A model of then solving all possible queries comes up after continued studying and analysis of the data. By use of appropriate statistical method, a chronological display is possible for further studying. Available characteristics make evaluation meaningful. Manual handling is extremely tiresome and draining.

In order for there to be a sensible flow, the process of merging the entire model is crucial. With all necessary data available, there can then be that opportunity to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the model through a simulation. Being open to making changes and reversing certain decisions is also an important step here. Modifications thus become possible whenever convenient.

When there is no external help, the input of the human mind often raises mistakes in calculations or figures due to fatigue especially where it involves longer formulae. Preparing designs through such programs at least ensures consistency and individuals can then cross-check data and provide an extensive analysis. The positives and negatives come out easily in this manner. Since it combines several tasks at once incapable with the brain, it remains the best solution.

The central database for all forms of data and simulation and so on is the application itself. Whether through virtual memory or normal ones on the processor, the difference is not unique. This allows for analysis and accessing of info from a point by all concerned individuals. Updates may also occur occasionally to improve its state.it acts as a sanctuary.

For such a unique application, the prototypes in form of simulations give rise to the opportunity to reference later on. This is a simple method of adding up to the data for comparison and analysis purposes, for situations requiring similar strategies. This is quite a unique task.

The mysterious connection between machinery and human creativity becomes a clear detail here. The underlined importance of this program is endless despite some few limitations, both functionally and logically. The coordination between the team and the machine enhances excellence in the best of ways anyone could imagine.

IT Support Performance And Maintenance Software Crashes Guides And Troubleshooting

Kamis, 10 April 2014

By Floyd Grant

IT support is always available should you need it. These folk just know how to get a computer running the way it should whether it be to implement a system recovery or just to back up the material you have on your system. These tasks and many others can be learnt by going through the help files on your particular system.

Operating systems are shipped with tools in order to fix and solve problems. This is known as troubleshooting in the world of technology. Troubleshooting performance can be executed quite simply if you know how. For one cleaning up your hard drive and then defragmenting helps improve performance and revives your system from working at a sluggish rate to a more faster one.

Most systems have a disk defragmenter option enabled on the system. What this nifty piece of software does is it rearranges the files in a way that is more accessible to finding them when needed. What happens is that when you work with files whether they be mp3 files, doc files or any files for that matter, the central processing unit has to look for them.

It is a good idea to do this especially when you have downloaded service packs and updates using windows update. As discussed defragmenting your hard drive groups specific files and folders together so that information from them is more easily retrievable. Another way to enhance the speed at which your computer works is to increase the paging file.

One way to do this is to increase the paging file on your computer. This can be done by typing in the words, paging file or virtual memory, in the search section of the help and support feature. Otherwise you can click on computer and then click on properties which will guide you to the paging file option.

It is a temporary storage place that consists of memory cards located on the mother board where they can be found slotted into the board themselves. Space that is used when computing lots of processes at the same time. Your paging file however is located on the hard disk. This exercise can be done quite simply by going to your control panel and clicking on computer then on properties in the drop down menu provided.

Your system will use the paging file automatically when the Ram cards used up. Think of it as extra local storage. What happens is when many calculations are being performed your local memory may run short. This is when the paging file is accessed in order to complete the input given to the computer so that is can carry out what you have asked it to do. Alternatively it is best to install more Ram cards. These can be purchased and slotted into their compartments hidden in the central processing unit. The change is immediately noticeable as you enjoy enhanced speeds at which your processor works.

Once you have entered the recycle bin window there is an option that says, empty recycle bin. This is a good option to use when you have deleted files on your computer as when you delete unwanted files it frees up more space on your hard drive which you can utilize for other uses. These tasks should be scheduled so that they are done automatically from month to month. Many are not able to carry out these tasks and make use of the experts that work in IT support or information technology.

Comparison of Free Vs Paid Internet Security Top 10 Free and Paid Products

Jumat, 14 Maret 2014

First it is useful to point out who is choosing free software vs. paid programs. When new computers are sold, they are typically pre-loaded with at least one full featured security suite - available as a free trial for a month or two. This recommended paid product is optional and is made available for those who are new to computers, and may not be aware that alternatives exist, or where to go to find them - knowing that most who default into this category will opt to follow recommendations and stay with, and pay for the program.
On the other hand, if youve been around the block a few times, you have by now enough savvy to know that anyone will try to sell you anything. Youre likely aware of other options and programs available to achieve the same results - whether self taught, by word of mouth, or doing your own web research. Regardless, you still end up wondering how exactly can free internet security compare or compete with the paid versions?
Contents: Whats the difference?
Paid internet security suites are designed for optimal performance and dependability. They include all the components that make up a comprehensive package for maximum computer protection - and feature live, accessible customer service. These components are a combination of - anti-virus, anti-spyware, ad ware, anti-malware, a firewall, anti-phishing detection, and recently, some form of live, real-time protection - detecting any malware activity - which may already be in progress - by continuous scanning for anything out of the ordinary. Protection like this is found in the full-featured, all-in-one, or premium security suites.
Free versions are individual components used in combination with other free components to custom build a comprehensive security defense. The idea is that combining individual free programs - achieves the same level of protection found in the paid versions. For example, I may start with a free anti-virus, then add a free anti spyware, adware, and malware program, then consider a firewall, and some sort of real-time protection to expose suspicious activity unidentified by all the others. These components together essentially resemble what you will find in an all-in-one security suite. Though I may not have access to customer support, how often really will I need to contact them? Maybe only if their service is unavailable for some reason, which usually means its on their end anyway - and will soon be resolved.
Performance: Is one more effective than another?
The answer is - not by much. Ive reviewed various results published by reliable sources. The trend seems to favor the paid products, but only by about 1% to 10% average, regarding performance and dependability. Ive put together a list consisting of the most highly rated free and paid internet security software offers. According to most resources available, these 2 groups reflect the most commonly agreed upon results. They are not in any particular order - as they seem to vary slightly from year to year. The fact that they are or have been consistently highly rated, and remain in the top 10, supports their reputation. Keep in mind that most free versions of internet security, also offer paid upgrades as well - usually named something like Pro, or Premium. You can search and compare them on your own if interested in knowing more about specific features or details for each.
Free Internet Security:
1. Avast.com - Antivirus
2. Avira.com or Antivir
3. AVG.com Antivirus
4. ZoneAlarm Firewall - Checkpoint.com (formerly Zonelabs)
5. Adaware - Lavasoft.com
6. Microsoft Security Essentials - microsoft.com/security_essentials
7. Comodo.com
8. Threatfire.com - (compliments most other components with real-time protection)
9. PandaSecurity.com - Panda Cloud
10. SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Super Antivirus
Paid Internet Security Suites:
1. Symantec.com - Norton Antivirus
2. McAfee.com
3. Avast.com - Premium
4. Kaspersky.com - Kaspersky Lab Internet Security
5. Gdatasoftware.com - G-Data.
6. Bitdefender.com
7. PCTools.com - Internet Security
8. F-Secure.com
9. Webroot.com - Webroot Internet Security Essentials
10.Trendmicro.com - Trend Micro
There are very good reasons supporting both decisions:
The consensus seems to validate that free versions are as reliable as the paid ones. People who tend to know more about internet security and are more computer/internet savvy in general will recommend the free products hands down. But their preferences are based on knowledge that many of us neither have, nor are even interested in - which is a solid argument for: go ahead and pay - they know more than I do. So it really comes down to what kind of operator are you? Do you have work to do and dont mind paying for reliable protection and piece of mind? Or are you more inclined to decide for yourself which components to include in your customized defense? There will always be choices - free alternatives to just about anything you can install on your computer.

HTML and CSS Interview Questions and Answers

Jumat, 07 Maret 2014

Q. Can you have a DIV element nested inside a SPAN element?
A. It is a bad practice to have a DIV element nested inside a SPAN element. You can have a SPAN inside a DIV. The reason being the DIV is a block element and SPAN is an inline element. So, why would you want to have a block element inside an inline element? SPAN is a like sub tag, which applies styles for the specified content in-between the SPAN tag.

Q. How will you decide between using nested HTML table tags and a DIV tag with CSS?
A. Use DIV tags with CSS for laying out the web pages and use TABLE for representing data.

Tabular data represented using html table tag.

To layout web page elements

The traditional way of laying out web pages was to place them inside invisible tables as demonstrated below. This way of laying out is more complicated to do, harder to maintain and makes the web pages to load very slowly.

Bad: Laying out with nested TABLE tags and CSS

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<title>Table Layout</title>

<style type="text/css">
table {
width: 100%;
height: 1000px;
}

td.header {
width: 100%;
text-align: center;
background-color: yellow;
}

td.contents {
width: 80%;
text-align: center;
background-color: orange;
}

td.rhsmenu {
width: 20%;
text-align: center;
background-color: green;
}

td.footer {
width: 100%;
text-align: center;
background-color: blue;
}
</style>

</head>
<body>
<table>
<tbody>
<tr height="15%">
<td class="header" colspan="2">Header Information</td>
</tr>
<tr height="65%">
<td class="contents">Contents go
here</td>
<td class="rhsmenu">RHS Panel</td>
</tr>
<tr height="20%">
<td class="footer" colspan="2">Footer Information</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

</body>
</html>

 The newer way to lay out your page elements is using DIVs and CSS. It can do everything tables can do and much more, and as an added bonus it loads a lot faster than tables ever did. It is easier to maintain, if you dont go overboard with nested DIVs. Use DIV for the conatainer and then use other elements SPAN, P, etc with CSS.

 Good: Laying out with DIVs and CSS tag

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<title>Div Layout</title>

<!-- This can be defined outside in its own file and included into an html file -->
<style type="text/css">
body {
display: block;
width: 400px;
height:400px;
text-align: center;
}

/* main content container floated to the left*/
#content {
position: relative;
width: 80%;
height: 65%;
float: left;
background-color: orange;
width: 320px;
}

/* rhs menu container floated to the left*/
#rhs-menu {
position: relative;
width: 20%;
height: 65%;
float: left;
background-color: green;
}

/* header container floated to the left*/
#header {
position: relative;
width: 100%;
height: 15%;
float: left;
background-color: yellow;
}

/* footer with "clear"" to ensure that the footer is always below content and rhs-menu */
#footer {
position: relative;
width: 100%;
height: 20%;
clear: both;
background-color: blue;
}

/* align text vertically*/
#content p,#rhs-menu p,#header p,#footer p {
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
left: 50%;
height: 50%;
width: 50%;
margin: -15% 0 0 -25%;
}

/* position the logo using absolute (from top left corner) or relative*/
.logo-text {
position: absolute;
top: 5px;
left: 10px;
}

</style>

</head>
<body>

<div id="header"><span class="logo-text">logo goes here </span>
<p>Header Information</p>
</div>
<div id="content">
<p>Contents go here</p>
</div>
<div id="rhs-menu">
<p>RHS Panel</p>
</div>
<div id="footer">
<p>Footer Information</p>
</div>

</body>
</html>

Note: It is a best practice to define HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in separate files. The CSS is combined with HTML in these examples for illustration purpose only.

The typical usecase for the "clear" css tag is when you want to put a footer at the bottom of your page, beneath the RHS menu and the content sections. So, by using the CSS tags like float, clear, absolute, relative, and display you can create attractive, maintainable, and faster layouts.

SQL Interview Questions and Answers on deleting records

Senin, 10 Februari 2014

The following is a very popular SQL job interview question.

Q. What is the difference between "Truncate" and "Delete" commands?
A.
  • TRUNCATE TABLE_NAME always locks the table and page but not each row, whereas  DELETE statement is executed using a row lock, each row in the table is locked for deletion.
  • Truncate removes all the records in the table whereas delete can be used with WHERE clause to remove records conditionally. That is remove only a handful number of records.
  • Truncate performance is much faster than Delete, as its logging is minimal wheres the Delete command logs every record.
  • Truncate does not retain the identity, whereas DELETE command retains the identity. When you use Truncate, If the table contains an identity column, the counter for that column is reset to the seed value that is defined for the column.
  • Truncate cleans up the object statistics and clears the allocated space whereas Delete retains the object statistics and allocated space.
  • TRUNCATE is a DDL (Data Definition Language) and DELETE is a DML (Data Manipulation Language).
  • Data removed by TRUNCATE command cannot be generally rolled back unless the database server specifically supports it. The DELETE command can rollback a transaction.
  • The TRUNCATE command does not fire any triggers, whereas the DELETE command fires any triggers defined on the table. For example, to keep an audit trail of records that have been deleted by inserting the deleted records into an audit table via the DELETE triggers.

Q. When will you use a truncate command?
A.TRUNCATE is useful for purging a table with huge amount of data. Alternatively, you can drop the table and recreate it that makes sense. Firing a delete command instead of a truncate command to empty a table with millions of records can result in locking the whole table and also can take longer time to complete, and at times cause the machine to hang.

The truncate command is executed as shown below.

TRUNCATE TABLE table_name

Q. Which command will you use to periodically purge data from your tables as part of a house keeping job?
A.  Use a DELETE command within a transaction with a WHERE clause to remove data that are older than 7 years. Remove  large amount of data in batches as opposed to in a single transaction.

Q. How will you delete a few records from single table
A.

DELETE FROM parent p WHERE p.parent_name = Peter

Q
. How will you delete a few records from parent and child tables where the parent table with parent_name = Peter?
A.

Firstly, you need to delete the child records because the integrity constraint wont let you delete the parent record when there are child records.

DELETE child

FROM  parent p, child c

WHERE p.parent_id = c.parent_id

  AND p.parent_name = Peter

Now, the parent table can be deleted as shown below

DELETE FROM  parent p WHERE p.parent_name = Peter

Note: Please note the difference in syntax when you make a join with the child. When there is only a single table involved, it is "DELETE FROM table_name", but when there is a join, it is "DELETE table_name" and then the "FROM" with the join clauses.

Q.  What do you do with the PURGE command?
A. The purge command is used to clear the recycle bin. It is generally used with the DROP command. For example,

drop table tablename purge;

the above  command will clear away the table from database as well as from the recycle bin. After executing  the purge command, you cannot retrieve the table using a flashback query.

    What is Inheritance in Java and OOPS Tutorial Example

    Jumat, 07 Februari 2014

    Inheritance in Java is an Object oriented or  OOPS concepts, which allows to emulate real world Inheritance behavior, Inheritance allows code reuse in Object oriented programming language e.g. Java. Along with Abstraction, Polymorphismand Encapsulation, Inheritance forms basis of Object oriented programming. Inheritance is implemented using extends keyword in Java and When one Class extends another Class it inherit all non private members including fields and methods. Inheritance in Java can be best understand in terms of Parent and Child class, also known as Super class and Sub class in Java programming language. The classwhich extends another class becomes Child of the class it extends and inherit all its functionality which is not private or package-private given where Child class is created. Inheritance is the most easy way to reuse already written and tested code but not always best way to do so, which we will see in this article. There are lot of example of Inheritance in Object oriented world e.g. Child inherit properties from parent, Dog inherit properties of Animal etc. In this Java and OOPS tutorial we will learn What is Inheritance in Java, How to use Inheritance in Java, Simple Example of Java Inheritance and some important points about Inheritance in Java.

    Java new I O Interview Questions and Answers

    The Java New IO is very powerful and it is all about performance!, performance!!, and performance!!!. But, you need to get your head around how the buffers work. Here are some questions and answers that will help you do that. Q. How does the Java NIO (i.e New IO) introduced in Java version 1.4 differ from the old IO?
    A. The NIO is all about better performance.

    IONIO (New IO)
    Stream oriented. This means that you read one or more bytes at a time, from a stream. What you do with the read bytes is up to you. They are not cached anywhere. Furthermore, you cannot move forward and back in the data in a stream. If you need to move forward and back in the data read from a stream, you will need to buffer yourself first.

    Buffer oriented. This means better performance. Data is read into a buffer from which it be processed later. You can move forward and back in the buffer. This gives you a bit more flexibility during processing. However, you also need to check if the buffer contains all the data you need in order to fully process it.
    Blocking IO. This means when a thread invokes a read() or write(), that thread is blocked until there is some data to read, or the data is fully written. The thread can do nothing else in the meantime.

    Non blocking IO. This means better performance. NIOs non-blocking mode enables a thread to request reading data from a channel, and only get what is currently available, or do nothing at all, if no data is currently available. Rather than remain blocked until data becomes available for reading, the thread can proceed with doing something else.
    You need to create additional threads to read and write data in parallel. More threads means more CPU context switching and consuming more thread stacks.Selectors.  This also means better performance. NIOs selectors allow a single thread to monitor multiple channels of input. You can register multiple channels with a selector, then use a single thread to "select" the channels that have input available for processing, or select the channels that are ready for writing. This selector mechanism makes it easy for a single thread to manage multiple channels. This is also known as multiplexing. The Apache MINA package is based on Java NIO to write high performance networking applications. For example, a TCP server.

    Here is the diagrammatic overview:

    Q. How do you manipulate the buffer in NIO?
    A. The NIO buffer  has following 3 state variables -- position, limit, and capacity

    • position: The position value keeps track of how much you have gotten from the buffer. It specifies from which array element the next byte will come. Thus, if youve written 1 bytes as shown below with shaded area to a channel from a buffer, that buffers position will be set to 1 (starting from 0), referring to the second element of the array as shown in the diagram.
    • limit: The limit variable specifies how much room there is left to put data into -- in the case of reading from a channel into a buffer or how much data there is left to get -- in the case of writing from a buffer into a channel. The position is always less than, or equal to, the limit. The limit is 3 (counting from 0) in the diagram below.
    • capacity:  The capacity of a buffer specifies the maximum amount of data that can be stored in the underlying array. The limit can never be larger than the capacity. The capacity is 6 (counting from 0) in the diagram below.

    In the above diagram, the position starts with 0, and after reading 1 byte, it becomes 1 byte, and the limit value of 3 states that there are 2 more bytes to be read.

    Q. What do you understand by terms flip( ) and clear( ) in NIO?
    A.

    Flip

    When you are ready to write your data to an output channel. You must call the flip() method. This method does two key things:

    1. It sets the limit to the current position.
    2. It sets the position to 0.

    You are now ready to begin writing data to a channel from the buffer starting from 0 to the limit.

    Clear

    After you have done your writes, the final step is to call the buffers clear() method. This method resets the buffer in preparation for receiving more bytes. Clear does two key things:

    1. It sets the limit to match the capacity.
    2. It sets the position to 0.

    Also, the get and put methods are used to get and put data to and from the buffer respectively. some coding examples are discussed in Java I/O interview Questions and Answers.

    Q. What is in the NIO.2 package introduced in Java 7?
    A. The more New I/O APIs for the Java Platform (NIO.2) in Java 7 enhance the New I/O APIs (NIO) introduced in Java 1.4 by adding

    • The four asynchronous channels to the java.nio.channels package.
    •  The java.io.File class is upgraded to the java.nio.file.Path that allows logical manipulating of paths in memory without accessing the file system.
    • The NIO.2 associates the notion of metadata like is hidden, is it a directory, size, access control, etc with attributes and provides access to them through the java.nio.file.attribute package. Since different file systems have different notions about which attributes should be tracked, NIO.2 groups the attributes into views, each of which maps to a particular file system implementation.
    • The NIO.2 provides support for both hard links and symbolic links and the Path class knows how to detect a link and will behave in the default manner if no configuration of behavior is specified.
    • The NIO.2 comes with a set of brand new methods for managing files and directories, such as create, read, write, move, delete, and so on. The most of these tasks are found in the java.nio.file.Files class.
    • The FileVisitor interface introduced in Java 7 makes recursing through directories and files a breeze.
    • The Watch Service API was introduced in Java 7 (NIO.2) as a thread-safe service that is capable of watching  a directory for changes to its content through actions such as create, delete, and modify. This means, with NIO.2, you no longer need to poll the file system for changes or use other in-house solutions to monitor the file system changes.
    • Java 7 (NIO.2) introduces a new interface for working with Random Access Files with its SeekableByteChannel and an interface named NetworkChannel that provides network channel classes for tetworking.

    Fedora and Gnome 3 Ubuntu and Unity will openSUSE and KDE benefit

    Right now it seems like some of the top Linux distributions such as Fedora and Ubuntu are heading down a slippery slope.

    Fedora 15 will be based on Gnome 3, it is still early days for the Gnome 3 project and over time I am confident it will get better but many (including myself) feel its not ready for use.

    I believe the simplicity of Gnome 2.x is what made it a success, the main menu bar provided a quick and efficient method of accessing your applications / system settings. The ability to minimize to a panel also provided users with a quick and efficient method of accessing minimized programs and by its very nature visually indicated that a program has been minimized.

    Gnome 3 on the other hand doesn’t really have a place to minimize applications to and should you use the gnome tweak tool to enable the minimize button to application windows, applications disappear (not minimize) to the activities tab leaving the user with no apparent visual indicator that an application has been banished (minimised) to the activities tab.

    Accessing or viewing applications in Gnome 3 generally requires use of the activities tab where you can either browse through all your applications or search for an application. Unfortunately the Gnome 2.x method of using the main menu (a concept featured in all major operating systems) is still a quicker and more efficient method of accessing your applications. The search function works effectively, although it doesnt help if you dont know what you are searching for.

    There is also space in the activities tab to place some of your favorite applications in a dock like fashion which will certainly mitigate some of the inefficiency caused by the method of browsing through or searching for applications, but some will always find it a slight annoyance since you have to invoke the activities tab to view it.

    People moved away from the command line and into graphical user interfaces because it made doing things easier and quicker, the current implementation of Gnome 3 compared to Gnome 2.x therefore seems like a step in the wrong direction.

    However, visually speaking Gnome 3 looks very modern and stylish.

    With Fedora being a project that aims to lead the advancement of FOSS the decision to include bleeding edge software and the latest developments such as Gnome 3 is the right decision and inline with the project goals.

    Fedora users will be familiar with the possibility that the latest and greatest can sometimes have a detrimental consequence and for many Gnome 3 is no exception. But the sad reality in this instance is for many Fedora users Gnome 3 is unworkable.

    So what will these users do?

    I expect many to hop over to another distro that still features Gnome 2.x and come back at a later date providing Gnome 3 has improved. Alternatively, Fedora does have a few other spins but Fedora at heart has always been a Gnome distribution and the majority of its users Gnome users.

    What about Ubuntu?

    Taking a look at Ubuntu presents a similar situation. Canonical Ltd have recognized that Gnome 3 is not quite ready for the Ubuntu user base and their solution is Unity. Ubuntu 11.04 features the new Unity desktop from Canonical Ltd which is currently a mish mash of Gnome 2.x and Compiz.

    Just like Gnome 3, some users like it and others hate it. Quite clearly Unity is not a finished product and I cannot understand why it was decided to make Unity the default desktop in Ubuntu 11.04.

    Some users feel Unity is easy to use and if you rarely ever have to go beyond the dock that stands to follow but just like Gnome 3 it also lacks the application menu as featured in Gnome 2.x. A poor decision.

    Instead you can view all applications by using the applications tab or the search function, this is the same as Gnome 3.

    The simplicity Gnome 2.x provided Ubuntu users has been lost with Unity, the very simplicity that made Ubuntu easier to use.

    Personally I think Unity for Ubuntu is a lost cause. There is nothing wrong with trying out new ideas and I give credit to Canonical Ltd for trying but those who are not good at using computers or those who find slick looking 3D GUIs complicated and hard to navigate will not appreciate Unity.

    I feel Canonical Ltd have over looked how the simplicity of Gnome 2.x contributed to making Ubuntu easy to use.

    So what now for Ubuntu and Fedora users?

    If you are one of those users who likes to have the latest version of a distribution the future may be looking quite grim. It has been confirmed that Ubuntu 11.10 will not feature a classic Gnome 2.x interface and future versions of Fedora will have Gnome 3.

    Looking ahead, Unity in Ubuntu 11.10 and Gnome 3 in Fedora 16 may be a completely different experience from what we are seeing right now but nothing is for certain. Therefore due to that uncertainty some users may go about looking for another distribution that doesnt use Gnome 3 or is not Ubuntu with Unity.

    The quest for another distribution will inevitably spark interest in some of the other desktop environments available and speaking of desktop environments, is there anything worth mentioning over KDE 4.6.x?

    Will openSUSE therefore benefit?

    With the recent acquisition of Novell by Attachmate now complete, SUSE has been split away from Novell and will be established as its own corporate entity. A positive step in the right direction for SUSE and the openSUSE project.

    Despite my own reasons for putting openSUSE behind me, it has the best implementation of KDE 4.6 (although I maintain the view if you have the time and patience, Gentoo with KDE is better) and a powerful system management application called YaST which makes administering your system easy (or at least in some instances that is the idea).

    Since the release of KDE 4.6 things have been looking very good for KDE and given openSUSE is a strong KDE distribution with many KDE developers behind it, if you are looking for a solid and usable desktop environment KDE 4.6.x (in other words openSUSE 11.4) is a great choice.

    The openSUSE project could do with more users, so if you are looking to try something different openSUSE is definitely worth considering.

    Its funny how things can change in just a few months,  not so long ago I would have been quite happy to recommend Ubuntu or Fedora but with current developments this is no longer the case.

    And not so long ago I was voicing my annoyance with openSUSE 11.4 but believe me, its nothing compared to Unity and Gnome 3.

    Top 20 Java technical interview questions and answers for experienced Java developers

    Rabu, 05 Februari 2014

    If you are an interviewer -- it really pays to ask well rounded questions to judge the real experience of the candidate as opposed to just relying on the number of years.

    If you are an interviewee -- You have no control over what questions will be asked in Java job interviews, but there are a few Java interview questions that are very frequently asked in job interviews, and it really pays to prepare for those questions. Here are a few such questions. This is based on some of my recent interviews. Brushing up on these answers will boost your success rate in Java job interviews.

    The focus is on judging your experience. So, go through your resume and reflect back on your hands-on experience. Many of these answers will also serve you well in selling your technical strengths to open ended questions like -- tell me about yourself? , why do you like software development?, when reviewing others work, what do you look for?, what was your most significant accomplishment?, etc

    Q1. Can you describe the high level architecture of the application that you had worked on recently? or Can you give a 100 feet birds eye view of the application you were involved in as a developer or designer?

    A1. The purpose is to judge your overall experience. Here are a few links that will prepare for this most sought-after question, especially for the experienced professionals.

    Q2. How would you go about deciding between SOAP based web service and RESTful web service?
    A2. Web services are very popular and widely used to integrate disparate systems. It is imperative to understand the differences, pros, and cons between each approach. Recently, I have been asked these questions very frequently, here is the answer that discusses the pros and cons of SOAP vs. RESTful web services in detail.

    Q3.How will you go about ensuring that you build a more robust application? or How do you improve quality of your application?
    A3. This question is very popular with the interviewers because they want to hire candidates who write good quality application. Here are some useful links to prepare for this question.

    Q4. What are some of the best practices regarding SDLC? Have you worked in an agile development environment? Did you use test driven development and continuous integration?
    A4.
    Q5: Can you write code? How would you go about implementing .....?
    A5:  You will be asked to write a small function or a program. The interviewer will be looking for things like
    • How well you analyze the requirements and the solution? Ask relevant questions if the requirements are not clear. Think out loud so that the interviewer knows that how you are approaching the problem.The approach is more important that arriving at the correct solution.
    • List all possible alternatives.
    • Write pseudo code.
    • Write unit tests.
    • Where required, brainstorm with the interviewer.
    • Find ways to improve your initial solution. Talk through thread safety and best practices where applicable.
    Here are some links to popular coding questions and answers.
    • Java coding interview questions and answers:. Covers a number of coding questions with answers. These are some of the popular coding interview questions like reversing a string, calculating the Fibonacci number, recursion vs iteration, equals versus ==, etc.

    Q6. How would you go about designing a car parking station?
    A6.
    Map out the requirements:
    • The car park needs to cater for different types of car parks like regular, handicapped, and compact.
    • It should keep track of empty and filled spaces.
    • It should also cater for valet parking.
    Map out the classes that would be required. Use a UML class diagram. Here are some points to get started.
    • A CarPark class to represent a parking station.
    • A ParkingSpace can be an abstract class or an interface to represent a parking space, and RegularParkingSpace, HandicappedParkingSpace, CompactParkingSpace, etc are subtypes of a ParkingSpace. This means a RegularParkingSpace is a ParkingSpace.
    • A CarPark has a (i.e. composition) finite number of ParkingSpaces. A CarPark also keeps track of all the parking spaces and a separate list of all the vacant parking spaces.
    • A Vehicle class uses a (i.e. delegation) ParkingSpace.  The Vehicle class will hold attributes using enum classes like  VehicleType and ParkingType. The vehicle types could be Compact, Regular, and Handicapped. The parking types could be Self or Valet. Depending on the requirements, the self or valet types could be designed as subtypes of the Vehicle class.

    Q7: Can you design the classes that represent a restaurant?
    A7: Very popular. Good understanding of OO design is vital to job interview success. Learn the SOLID design principles, know why you favor composition over inheritance, and dont under estimate the power of coding to interface.
    • Java OO Interview Questions and Answers. A step-by-step tutorial explaining how you would go about designing your classes. The "Core Java Career Essentials" PDF covers more examples on SOLID design principles with working code.

    How would you go about identifying thread safety issues in an application? How would you go about identifying memory leaks issues? How would you go about identifying performance issues?, etc to judge your experience. I am yet to work on a project that didnt face problems relating to thread safety, memory leaks, and performance issues. Hence, it really pays to market your skills and experience in fixing issues relating to these common challenges.

    Q8. How will you go about fixing memory leaks in Java?
    A8. Again, a very common problem, and a thorough answer will go a long way in securing your next Java job.

    Q9: How will you go about fixing performance issues in Java?
    A9:
    • Detecting performance issues in Java. A basic tutorial covering -- how to detect performance issues.
    • Also, refer to the JMeter tutorials in this blog as to learn how you can put load on your application to simulate concurrent users.

    Q10: How will you go about detecting and fixing thread-safety issues in Java?
    A10: Debugging concurrency issues and fixing any thread starvation, dead lock, and contention requires skills and experience to identify and reproduce these hard to resolve issues. Here are some techniques to detect concurrency issues.
    • Manually reviewing the code for any obvious thread-safety issues. There are static analysis tools like Sonar, ThreadCheck, etc for catching concurrency bugs at compile-time by analyzing their byte code.
    • List all possible causes and add extensive log statements and write test cases to prove or disprove your theories.
    • Thread dumps are very useful for diagnosing synchronization problems such as deadlocks. The trick is to take 5 or 6 sets of thread dumps at an interval of 5 seconds between each to have a log file that has 25 to 30 seconds worth of runtime action. For thread dumps, use kill -3 in Unix and CTRL+BREAK in Windows. There are tools like Thread Dump Analyzer (TDA), Samurai, etc. to derive useful information from the thread dumps to find where the problem is. For example, Samurai colors idle threads in grey, blocked threads in red, and running threads in green. You must pay more attention to those red threads.
    • There are tools like JDB (i.e. Java DeBugger) where a “watch” can be set up on the suspected variable. When ever the application is modifying that variable, a thread dump will be printed.
    • There are dynamic analysis tools like jstack and JConsole, which is a JMX compliant GUI tool to get a thread dump on the fly. The JConsole GUI tool does have handy features like “detect deadlock” button to perform deadlock detection operations and ability to inspect the threads and objects in error states. Similar tools are available for other languages as well.

    Health and Safety Tips for Computer Users

    With computer use increasing more and more and encompassing our lives from every aspect, its no wonder the number of headaches, eye strain, and RSI cases caused by computer use are increasing annually. Most people use a computer all day long while at work and the first thing they do when they get home is press that power button on their PC. And then put their eyes on OT for another 4-6 hours. We hardly get outside and focus on objects in the distance. Another problem of focusing on objects for long periods of time is that our muscles get weak to QUICKLY focus on objects. Unless you are an athletic person where you have to focus on moving objects and continually cause your eye muscle to focus and refocus, your eyes probably are not getting the healthy workout they need.
    This write-up is to help remind you that your eyes are a precious part of your body and you only get one set of them. But not only does this write-up talk about how to make sure you give your eyes a rest from time to time, but also how to protect yourself from muscle strains in your neck, fingers, and arms. You of course, dont need to treat this guide as the solution for all, but being aware and conscious about what you are doing while using your PC should help to keep you body healthy.

    HOW TO REMIND YOURSELF TO TAKE A BREAK
    The hardest part is remembering when to take a break, especially when we get consumed by our work and we have deadlines. For IT engineers, we are usually under high levels of stress and have deadlines to meet, which usually leads to not taking breaks. We need to be cautious of this and make sure to take breaks from time to time.

    There are a few free software programs available online that will help remind you to take breaks from time to time and keep you from overworking your hands and eyes. I recommend Break Install or Workrave for the PC. Both are free and full of features. Workrave is my favorite as it displays sample exercises while the break time screen is activated - something that is educational and will keep you entertained. There are some programs for the Mac as well, for example, Timeout and AntiRSI. These programs force you to take a break from working which not only give your eyes time to relax but also your fingers, wrists, neck, and other muscles that are used to type, read, and move your mouse.

    These programs will also display usage statistics, and allow you to customize the break times and durations. You can also skip the required breaks when necessary, for example, when you are in the middle of doing something critical. Most of the software will give you an option to skip your break or postpone it. Although, if you find yourself constantly hitting postpone or skip, you might want to consider disabling this feature.
    THE LONG BREAK
    Although short breaks (also known as micro-pauses) are the key, longer breaks away from the computer are also important. You should also try to make sure you take breaks before you actually need them. How often you take breaks and when you take them is actually more important than how long you take breaks for. Taking 2 breaks over 8 hours for 30 minutes each is not going to help as much as 8 breaks for 5 minutes at a time.
    Recent research studies have shown that taking breaks are proven to help reduce fatigue and prevent soreness.
    Micro-pauses are just as important. You should remember to take time away from the computer occasionally to stretch and re-focus your eyes to distant objects. If you have been working intensely at your computer for an hour or more, more than likely you have not blinked as much as you should have and a break is needed.

    So if you are working intensely at your computer, in order to reduce fatigue and prevent soreness, the following breaks need to be incorporated into your daily working practice:
    * Breaks every hour or so
    * Micro-pauses every 4-10 minutes
    * Remember to blink frequently as when you use a PC you tend to lower your overall blink rate.
    Micro-pauses
    At about 4-10 minute intervals, let go of your mouse and look away from the screen. Drop your arms down to your sides, lean back and allow your shoulders to relax. A micro-pauses should take roughly 5-10 seconds.
    Breaks
    After an hour or so of working continuously at your computer, you should take a short break away from you workstation. You should do some non-computer work, for example, make a telephone call, talk to a colleague, or file documents. You want to try to do something away from your computer for at least 2-3 minutes.
    Blinking
    Blinking your eyes is also very important. When we use computers we tend to lower are overall blink rate, which causes our eyes to dry out and results in scratched corneas which then causes blurry or impaired vision temporary. We develop bad habits of staring at our computers for long periods of time and forgetting to blink, try to keep a mental note to constantly blink.
    Exercises
    During a break it is also good to do stretches and exercises to rejuvenate your muscles:
    * Shoulder stretch - stretch your arms above and behind your head while clasping your hands tightly together.
    * Upper arm Stretch - place one arm across your chest and grab your elbow with your other hand and pull lightly stretching your shoulder. Repeat it again with your other arm.
    * Sitting trunk twist - extend your arms out in front of your body, clasp your hands while in a seated position and gently twist from side to side, stretching the upper and lower back.
    * Elbow stretch - extend one arm out in front of you. Grab the hand of the extended arm with your free hand and bend your hand gently downward stretching your forearm muscles.
    * Power blinks - So a series of quick blinks, roughly 2-3 blinks per second for roughly 1 minute. Now to bring blood flow to your eyes you will want to shut your eyes and close them tight for 5 seconds, then open your eyes and leave at a relaxed state for 5 seconds, repeat this 6 times.
    What you may be surprised to learn is that even low levels of muscle tension can cause RSI if sustained over a long period. If you are stressed you will notice muscle tension even faster, so remember to remain relaxed.
    Another interest fact is that just 18% of maximum force is enough to reduce blood flow to the muscle by 80%!

    If you have muscle fatigue or tension and continue to work intensely at your computer, you are likely to experience pain and discomfort and could develop repetitive strain injury (RSI).
    The term repetitive strain injury is a confusing one and as a result, there are many misunderstandings. Let us take a few moments to look at the true cause of RSI in computer use.
    For computer users it is actually static muscle tension, not repetition that causes most of the problems. This means that you do not have to be the fastest typist to get RSI. Just spending too many hours at your computer can be enough. This definitely applies to those of us that use a computer to do their job all day and then go home to continue to use your computer for personal use. You are at highest risk, so you should make sure to take plenty of breaks and make sure to give your eyes and muscles a chance to take a break.
    WHATS THE SOLUTION?
    Breaks are a proven way to allow your mind and muscles to recover from fatigue. Stretches and exercise also rejuvenates your muscles. Breaks help you to improve your overall health and efficiency.

Its difficult as we have built in these habits of working strait through our tasks and not thinking about anything else. Youll typically not take a break until you are far past the point at which you should have taken a break, which is why software to remind you is key.
    Achieving the right amount of muscle recovery at the right times is more complicated than you might think. Muscles recover very quickly from low levels of fatigue but quite slowly from high levels. Once your muscles become tired and sore, recovery takes a long time. For those of you that workout at the gym, recall what you feel like after a workout from a long break from the gym. You feel extremely sore the next couple of days and your recovery takes about double what you usually expect when you are in the middle of your normal workout routine. This is because 1.) you just shocked your body from not working out for a good amount of time and 2. ) your muscles are highly fatigued, so recovery takes longer.
    Recovery at frequent periods from low-level fatigue will take only around ten seconds whereas high levels of fatigue will take much longer - even up to several hours. One solution to muscle fatigue is to take micro-pauses, very short breaks of 5-10 seconds every 4-10 minutes. This relaxes your muscles and restores a healthy blood flow.
    Why are micro-pauses so important?
    * They take very little time and can easily be developed to become a healthy habit
    * They prevent fatigue build up
    * The are taken before discomfort occurs
    * They are perfect for reminding you to do some quick blinking exercises
    Micro-pauses are the most effective and efficient breaks you can take but remembering to take them can be difficult.
